"The Artist" -Mychael Foster

"The Artist"
by Mychael Foster

This film embodies the true essence that is silent film. We have two classic looking actors, overly expressed faces, and an epic love story.  For me this film was perfect, but I have a long relationship with silent movies and black and white movies since I was a child. For this reason, I could pick out certain moments in The Artist that mirrored certain shots or styles from films of the time. There is this staircase shot that stands out to me even now, it was like stepping back in time and walking into a theater to see my first silent film on screen. Which in all reality it was my first silent film on the big screen. The comparisons in the movie to current filmmaking endeavors such as 2D to 3D really stuck out to me. The movie is about an actor who refuses to progress with the industry and in doing so gets left in the dust. Can’t this be said about 3D movies? So many people fight it, but it seems to be the future. Overall this movie was fantastic, beautiful, elegant, and all around a piece of art.

4 Stars (reason being the movie wasn't original enough for me)
